Welcome to Across the Bridge with news, stories, events and entertainment for the mountain communities of California’s Central Sierra including Yosemite National Park. This is Kellie Flanagan reporting for KRYZ Radio.

It’s officially autumn which brings us to one of the most beautiful and milder seasons in the Sierra and September is California Wine Month. So – there’s plenty to do. Let’s get to it.

In Yosemite, join the 16th Annual Yosemite Facelift – an event held each fall to clean up trash and debris from around the park after the busy summer season. Starting on Wednesday, Sept. 25 sign up at the booth in front of the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center. A second check-in area will be located at the Tuolumne Meadows Store on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28. Crew leaders at the booths will organize work groups and hand out trash bags, gloves and litter sticks. The Yosemite Facelift is a park-wide event that was started by the Yosemite Climbing Association and this is the single largest volunteer cleanup at any national park.

In Oakhurst on Thursday, Sept. 26 stop by South Gate Brewing Co. where Sutton James will play from 8 – 10 p.m. The singer/songwriter has just released his debut solo album, High Country Hiatus and he’s on a coast to coast tour supporting its release. He’s a lover and performer of all periods of music and, even though his most recent efforts fit nicely within the indie-folk/alt country genres, the spirit of rock ‘n roll will always be alive and well in his songwriting and Sutton’s engagingly energetic live shows. South Gate Brewing Company, Thursday night, 8 p.m.

In Coulterville, the 34th annual CoyoteFest fundraiser benefiting the Northern Mariposa County History Center will take over the whole town on Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday Sept. 28. Start Friday evening at the Coulter Café with Faux Renwah performing old fashioned bluegrass. On Saturday there’s a down home parade and classic car show plus a craft and artisan marketplace alive with the music of the Roger Perry Band. Do not miss the howling contest. The CoyoteFest ends up back on the patio of the Coulter Café with danceable music by the Dave Henderson Group with their upbeat blend of country, jazz, rock and pop covers. CoyoteFest — good food, good people and good fun that will keep you howling into the night.

In Ahwahnee on Friday, Sept. 27 check out the powerful vocals of soul singer Keysha Burns live at Sierra Meadows. With a knockout voice and Fresno’s finest backing band, this is a can’t miss evening of music featuring a selection of R&B, funk and soul to move your heart and your feet. The Experience features Eva Scow on mandolin, Ray Moore on drums, Patrick Olivera on bass and Mike Taylor on the guitar. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Doors open at 6 and dinner is available for purchase. Kids 13 and under are always free!

In Yosemite on Saturday, Sept. 28, celebrate National Public Lands Day with free entry into Yosemite National Park. The fee waiver includes entrance fees on Saturday only and is not associated with the camping fees, or any other fees in the park.

In Mariposa on Saturday, Sept. 28, stop by the Mariposa County Park for a free day of family fun with the 30th Annual Children’s Fair sponsored by Infant/Child Enrichment Services. You’ll hear live music by the Beat Harvest students with activites like bubble play, eco-friendly arts and crafts, face painting and kids rapelling with Mariposa Search and Rescue, Balloon Belles and Reptile Ron. Lunch will be available from Tacos Sonora. That’s the 30th Annual Children’s Fair at the Mariposa County Park from 10 to 2 on Saturday and it’s free!

In Oakhurst on Saturday night, The Soul Galaxy plays live music in the beer garden at The Queens Inn as their music by the river series continues at the award winning winery located just off Highway 41.

In Nippanawassee on Saturday, Sept. 28, Coolwater Ranch and The Redwoods present two-time grammy winner Laurence Juber starting at 7 p.m. at Coolwater Ranch. Recognized as lead guitarist in Paul McCartney’s band Wings, Juber is a world renowned guitar virtuoso and entertainer. $25 suggested donation or $30 at the door, with passes available at Branches Books and Mountain Feed and Nursery. Saturday night!

In Mariposa, the Mariposa Theatre Alliance presents an open air performance of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors by Merced Shakespearefest. The plays take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29 at 7 p.m. at the Mariposa County Amphitheatre. Tickets are $12, $10 and $9 and may be purchased at the Mariposa County Arts Council’s online shop or at the office on Highway 140. Comedy of Errors takes to the stars for a healthy dose of intergalactic hilarity with one nonstop case of mistaken identity and confusion for all involved, much to the amusement of the audience. Saturday and Sunday in Mariposa.
